How well your plants grow depends upon the type of plant you select for planting, the care you provide during plantation, and the follow-up care plant receives after planting. Fertilizer and soil you use are not only things that matter.  Some various processes or techniques can help you perform planting in the right way. Carefully follow these steps or tips during planting any plants.

General tips before planting

  1. Choose a plant that is suited to its site. 
  2. Determine the hardy zone of the plant you want to grow, so specific plant variety can be grown to thrive under the present climatic conditions.
  3. Soil is influential as much as the type of plants to be grown. Some plants prefer dry soil, some loamy and well-drained, so research before planting.

  1. Inspect and prune the roots if required.
  2. Gather coco peat or coir to mix it in with the soil. These natural materials are exceptional at retaining water which is necessary for plants.

  1. Inspect the area and check if it has been affected by any bacteria or not before planting the seed. 
  2. Use large open areas with enough headroom, so plants don’t start leaning on either side when they grow taller.

 

General tips during planting

  1. First of all, water the whole planting site in an adequate amount.
  2. Dig a proper and wide enough hole and loosen the soil at the sides of planting.
  3. The root ball of the plant should rest on a soil foundation, so don’t dig the hole much deeper than the root ball.
  4. Place the plant in the hole and situate the plant gently in the proper manner.
  5. Backfill the hole immediately using the native soil that was originally removed from the same hole.
  6. Water the plant thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots of plans and to eliminate any air vents.
  7. Make and use natural compost which is always a better option.

 

General approaches of planting to utilize space

Traditional Method

The traditional method of growing involves directly planting in the desired area or plot.

Benefits: 

  • Economical
  • much easier to start.

Drawbacks: 

  • Can waste a lot of water
  • Depends upon the natural soil 
  • Harder to maintain and exposed to external agents
  • Weeds are harder to control.

 

Container Method

One of the most common easy of planting. Plants are grown simply in a pot or any plastic container.

Benefits: 

  • Very space-efficient
  • Suitable for beginners
  • Flexible, easier to maintain.

Drawbacks: 

  • Pots can limit the growth of the plants, 
  • Soil dries much faster, 
  • Some pots can crack so better invest in quality pots.

 

Raised Bed Method

Unlike the traditional approach, the soil is raised using a bed made specially from wood, bricks, etc.

Benefits:

  • Weeds are easier to control.
  • Planting doesn’t take a toll on your back, as you don’t have to lean as much.
  • Versatile and can be used anywhere.
  • The quality of soil is much better for plantations.
  • Better control over excess water.

 

Drawbacks:

  • A bit more expensive when you include the charge of creating beds.
  • Beds need to be created beforehand, so it takes longer to start in the first place.
  • Not suitable for apartments or smaller areas.
  • Harder to revert to original methods.

 

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in nutrient-fortified water, instead of in soil. It can also be termed as aquaculture or soilless culture.

Benefits:

  • Efficient resources management
  • quality food production
  • Up to 90% more efficient use of water.
  • No pest control products are needed.

 

Drawbacks:

  • Experience and technical knowledge are needed.
  • Water and electricity risk.
  • Costly process.

  1. A very interesting article. I thought they were part of pilea peperomioids. These nasturtium grow like weeds where I live in southern part of South Africa. The only problems are snails. They are hardy and face drought conditions well. We don’t get frost. I love them xx
