Raspberries are perennial with woody stems. Raspberry gives fruit year after year and harvests in the middle of summer.

These are easy-growing plants and spread widely without any human effort. You can also plant raspberry in your garden. Also, in the south and east Asian forests, we can found this berry in large numbers.

There are different types of raspberry; the most common raspberries are red, black, and purple.

 

Main two types of Raspberry

Summer bearing raspberries:-

Summer-bearing raspberry produces fruit throughout the summer only. The canes of summer-bearing plants take two years to mature. After giving the fruit, the canes die.

Some summer-bearing raspberries are Meeker, Willamette, Newburgh, Candy, Latham, Chilcotin, Boyne, and Tulameen.

Everbearing raspberries:-

Everbearing raspberries produce one crop on the top half of the canes in the early fall and follow another crop on the lower half in the following spring.

Some most popular everbearing varieties are Heritage, Amity, Summit, Dinkum, Autumn Bliss, and Caroline.

 

How to plant raspberry?

It is quite easy to plant raspberry than other fruits and berries. But for producing a high yield of the berry, you must follow some methods while planting.

Before planting any plant, it is necessary to choose the best area that suits the plant. For the raspberry, one must select the sunny area.

The best area for raspberries is temperate zones, hardiness zones 2-9.  

 

Soil type

Raspberry grows well in any soil; there is no specific soil type for raspberry.

But the ph of the soil must be slightly acidic to neutral. Also, the soil must be well-drained.

 

Selection of plant

The most important thing that all of the cultivators should keep in mind is the selection of plants. Select the best plant; the bad plant will not give you more profit. While selecting plants, you can follow the following tips.

– You must select disease-free plants and buy them from a reputed nursery.

– Plants with viruses transmit the virus to other healthy plants rapidly, and there is no way to cure the plants once they are infected. So destroy infected plants to control the spread of viruses.

– Moreover, raspberry plants can be purchased as dormant bare-root plants or as potted plants, select according to your need.

– Also, the plants bear different types of fruits. So at first select the type that suits your zone and the type of fruits you need. 

 

Planting raspberry

Spring is the best time to plant the raspberry.

A couple of inches of compost mixed into the soil before planting will create a high-quality planting site. Include about 3 1/2 cubic feet of compost per 100 square feet.

After then dig a hole that suits your plant. Then place the berries plant in the hole and spread the roots in the hole.

If there are some unusual roots, then you can cut them. After then slowly put soil.

If you are planting in the pot, you must spread the roots and cut unnecessary wounded roots.

 

Spacing

Proper spacing is most important for easy harvest and to keep them free from diseases.

If you’re planting the red and yellow raspberries, then leave the space of 10 inches between them. And for the black and purple raspberries, leave the gaping of 4 feet because these raspberries spread from one steam into many others. 

 

How to care for the raspberry?

Watering

Proper watering is necessary for plants to supply the minerals to the plant. The raspberry needs 1-1.5 inches of water.

Always keep checking the moisture of the water since overwatering can cause root rot and other diseases. Also, the sandy soil needs more irrigation on sunny days. 

 Standing water will increase the likelihood of disease problems and the death of the plants due to a lack of oxygen to the roots.

 

Sunlight

Raspberries are more suitable for facing full sunlight. So they must be in areas where they get sufficient sunlight.

 

Support

Raspberries grow vigorously and need annual pruning. This keeps the plants attractive, increases productivity, and reduces diseases. After the last harvest, all canes that have produced fruit should be cut to ground level and removed. 

Don’t cut back more than 25% of each cane to avoid reduced yield. Cut all canes off at the base only if fall crop is desired. It should be done before growth begins in spring then the plant will produce fruits on primocanes in late summer or fall.

 

Harvesting

Raspberries should be harvested when they are fully ripe. Fully ripen raspberry will release from the stem easily with the core remaining on the plant when tugged.

  1. A very interesting article. I thought they were part of pilea peperomioids. These nasturtium grow like weeds where I live in southern part of South Africa. The only problems are snails. They are hardy and face drought conditions well. We don’t get frost. I love them xx
